Chapter Twelve
The day after the outing to Joâs Pizza, Erin sat with her phone in hand, desperately wanting to reach out to Lucy. Her friendâs contact information was displayed on the screenâshe just needed to gather the courage to connect the callâbut she wasnât sure what to say after keeping a secret so big for so long.
Before she could figure out the answer to that question, a knock sounded, and opening the door, she found herself face-to-face with her best friend.
âOhmygodâlook at you,â Erin said, her eyes filling with tears as she greeted her very pregnant friend. âYou are totally glowing.â
âIâm sweating,â Lucy corrected. âBecause growing a baby has thrown my internal thermostat out of whack. But I donât care that Iâm sweating, Iâm going to hug you anyway because Iâve missed you like crazy.â
Erin laughed as she returned her friendâs embrace. âIâve missed you, too. And your whacked-out thermostat notwithstanding, you look absolutely fabulous.â
âI feel pretty goodâother than the occasional flare-up of sciatica when the baby puts pressure on the nerve.â Her expression turned serious as she took Erinâs hands. âIâm so sorry I couldnât be with you for your dadâs funeral.â
âItâs okay,â Erin said. âYou had the very best reason not to be there. Although, a heads-up that your brother was coming might have been good.â
âI didnât think youâd be surprised to see him.â She met her friendâs gaze squarely. âOf course, I didnât know youâd had his child, either, so obviously we need to work on our communication skills.â
âItâs been an eventful eleven-and-a-half months,â Erin told her, hedging.
âWeâve got a lot to catch up on,â Lucy agreed. âBut first, I want to meet my nephew.â
âApparently he wants to meet you, too,â she said, as a soft cooing emanated from the baby monitor on the counter.
âOh.â Lucy pressed a hand to her heart. âThose cute little baby sounds just make me go all soft and gooey inside.â
âHe makes other sounds, too, that arenât nearly as cute,â Erin told her, leading the way to the babyâs room. âEspecially at three oâclock in the morning.â
âI donât believe it,â her friend said, reaching into the crib to pick up the baby. âHey, there, sweetie. Itâs your Auntie Lucy. Iâm so happy to finally meet you.â
Joel, always happy to be the center of attention, responded with a happy smile.
âOh.â Lucyâs eyes got misty. âLook at thatâis he really smiling at me?â
âHeâs really smiling at you,â Erin confirmed.
âYou have no idea how much I wanted to camp out on your doorstep, waiting for you to come home, so I could meet him. The only thing that held me back was knowing that my mother would never forgive me if I got to see him first.â
âI guess she told you that we were at the pizzeria yesterday?â Erin said.
âShe told me. Frank told me. Mrs. Eldridge who comes in for lunch every Friday told me. And Tom Gilchrist from the hardware store told me.â
âI almost forgot that the Haven rumor mill is a well-oiled piece of machinery,â Erin said.
